What is Autism Spectrum Disorder?

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) refers to a group of developmental disabilities—including classic autism, pervasive developmental disorder-not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), and Asperger’s Syndrome—that affect a person’s ability to understand what they see, hear, and otherwise sense. It is a brain difference that impacts communication, social interaction, and behavior. Individuals with ASD typically have difficulty understanding verbal and nonverbal communication and learning appropriate ways of relating to other people, objects, and events. No two people with ASD are the same. It is often said, “When you have met one person with autism, you have met one person with autism.”

As its name implies, ASD is a spectrum disorder that affects individuals differently and with varying degrees of severity. Additionally, ASD is often found in combination with other disabilities.

The four primary areas affected are:

  • Communication
  • Social Interactions
  • Behavior and Sensory Responses
  • Thinking and Learning

The current estimate is that 1 in 150 children born today will have a diagnosis of autism.  Newer statistics report that it may even be as high as 1 in 91.  There is no prevention or cure for autism.  Autism is treatable and when individuals receive appropriate supports and intervention they can live meaningful and productive lives.  Full Spectrum Farms, Inc is dedicated to establishing a supportive farm community where each person can realize their full potential.
